Master’s Degree in Jewelry Design

Traditional and Modern Jewelry Design

Traditionally, the value of jewelry has been dependent on the price of its stones and metals. However, in the modern era, the nature of the design and its artistic value have become more dominant over the material concept. This shift has led the global market towards purposeful design of valuable and decorative products, even with semi-precious and everyday materials. A jewelry designer is someone who combines science and art to create ornaments.

If we consider gold as a benchmark for jewelry design and production, we can understand the importance of the jewelry-making profession by comparing statistics. Iran is the sixth largest consumer of gold in the world, with an annual consumption of about 118 tons and a gold circulation of approximately 300 tons (18 trillion tomans). The global jewelry market also has an annual turnover of over 600 billion dollars.

Given the existing potentials in the country in the field of jewelry making, utilizing modern knowledge and transferring it to young forces in an academic environment is an effective way to grow the industry and, consequently, boost the country’s economic growth. Moreover, employing trained and creative forces within the country not only creates jobs but also preserves Iranian-Islamic traditions and culture in the products used domestically, preventing the influx of diverse and inappropriate foreign items into the local markets.
